Small editorial team of journalists working around a desk

About

Who we are and how we work

A small editorial team in Thika, committed to making economic journalism readable, accurate and genuinely useful for Kenyan audiences.

Built for readers who want to understand, not just consume

Pulsecspark was founded in 2019 by a group of journalists and economists who had grown frustrated with the way economic news was presented in Kenya — either too technical for general readers or too shallow to be genuinely informative. The name reflects our intent: to spark understanding by tracking the pulse of the economy. We cover five core beats — macro-economy, business, labour market, policy and household budget — and we apply the same editorial standard to each: start with data, explain the mechanism, give at least one concrete Kenyan example, and be honest about what the evidence cannot tell us. Since launch, we have published over 400 original articles, collaborated with three Kenyan universities on data literacy workshops, and built a readership that spans civil servants, SME owners, NGO researchers and secondary-school economics teachers. We are a micro-team of six people, including two reporters, a data analyst, a sub-editor and two editorial contributors who work on a commission basis.

How our reporting process works — and what we do not do

Every Pulsecspark article begins with a primary source: a government statistical release, a parliamentary committee report, a Central Bank policy statement or peer-reviewed economic research. A reporter then identifies the two or three most consequential implications for Kenyan households or businesses, interviews at least one practitioner or affected party, and drafts the explainer. The sub-editor checks every figure against the source before publication. We do not publish opinion columns, investment commentary, cryptocurrency analysis or any content that could be construed as financial or trading advice. We also do not run sponsored editorial: all advertising is clearly labelled and editorially independent. Results in economic reporting always depend on how policy is implemented, how firms respond and how global conditions evolve — so we frame findings as informed analysis, not predictions. Our terracotta-cream visual identity reflects our editorial philosophy: warm and approachable, but grounded in the earthy realities of Kenyan economic life rather than the glossy aesthetics of financial marketing.
